Our Fly Fishing

The late President Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalyn made frequent trips to Guanaja expressly to fly fish.  It was most likely President Carter's 2010 article in Fly Fish Magazine that put Guanaja on the map as a "must-visit" location previously unknown to most fishermen.

The flats here, a highly diverse flats system, with sand, turtle grass, and coral flats, are rarely fished. This means there is very little angling pressure on the fish, which is good news for the fish and the fisherman!

Permit and Bonefish are present in exceptional numbers, and guests should have high expectations at having multiple shots at tailing bonefish. But there will also be opportunities to target other species, in particular tarpon.  Lots of fish and negligible angler pressure give anglers a realistic chance of a grand slam (bonefish, tarpon, and permit on the same day).

We work with local guides who are experts in their field and offer full or half-day fly fishing/casting expeditions.  They are also happy to offer lessons in the flats right at Clark's Cay!

Boats

The guides use flats boat/panga mix boats that were custom-made for the local waters. Each has a poling platform and a large casting platform at the front of the boat. The Guanaja flats system offers quite a stable footing, so guests who prefer to spend more time wading than boat casting will have plenty of opportunities.

There is also excellent fishing right in the flats at the Resort. Guests staying at Clark's Cay will have easy access to tailing Bonefish right off of the island's beaches.

Gear

Our guides can include gear, but if you are bringing your own flies, make sure they have weed guards.  Recommended flies are Crazy Charlie's, Gotchas, Bonefish Bites, Mudsliders, and for Permit, Kung Fu's. 9 weight fly rods are used as well as #12 leaders for Bonefish and #16 for Permit.

Deep-sea charters can easy be arranged for our guests.  Charters frequently troll for marlin, tuna, wahoo, mahi-mahi, mackerel, and barracuda. Options include 1/2 or full day excursions, as follows:
